Ibrox Exclusive: Alex McLeish delivers verdict on Morelos 'conundrum' ahead of Willem II clash
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has claimed it makes sense for Steven Gerrard to keep playing Alfredo Morelos, despite reports linking him with a move away from Ibrox.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss suggested that Gerrard and Morelos can both benefit from continuing to play the Colombian forward, as long as he is a Rangers player.
Morelos continues to be linked with a move to Lille but is still playing games for the Gers, most recently scoring against Hibernian last weekend in a 2-2 draw at Easter Road that saw Rangers concede for the first time this season.
Morelos picked up a knock in the game between Rangers and Dundee earlier this month, which turned out not be a long term issue.
But, any long term injury could potentially scupper any chance for Morelos to move on during this transfer window.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said: “These are the setbacks or conundrums that can hurt a coach or managers in the game.
“You don’t know what’s in the guy’s head if he’s going to leave, if he’s determined to leave, or he’s been promised, ‘look stay with us for so long, give everything and then we’ll help you on your way’.
“You just don’t know what’s gone on and you know Morelos obviously took a bit of a sore one, and I still think that Stevie has to carry on regardless and keep playing him.
“I would like to think that Morelos is keen to keep playing anyway, to keep himself fit, and to keep himself in good form in the event he that leaves Ibrox.”
Rangers will look to get back to winning ways against Willem II in the Europa League on Thursday, before travelling to Motherwell this Sunday, as they hunt for the Scottish Premiership title.
