Report – Former Gerrard teammate plots loan raid for Rangers midfielder

Rangers youngster Jamie Barjonas has emerged as a target for Oldham Athletic, according to The Scottish Sun

The midfielder was on the bench for the Gers’ 2-2 draw with Hibernian on Sunday, but it is understood that Steven Gerrard is eager for him to go out and gain more regular first team minutes this season.

And Oldham, who are now managed by Gerrard’s ex-Liverpool teammate Harry Kewell, are keen to take the 21-year-old on loan.

Kewell is eager to reshape his new squad after an underwhelming season in League Two last season, and reportedly sees Barjonas as a player who could help him to achieve his aims at Boundary Park.

The midfielder has previously spent loan spells with Bury and Raith Rovers, as well as spending a spell with Partick Thistle last term.

Rangers

Would a move to Oldham be good for Barjonas?

We think so, yes.

The midfielder has obvious potential, and his goalscoring turn against OGC Nice in preseason certainly proved that he is one to watch.

But at the age he is now, if he is to properly kick on a develop into the player that Gerrard wants him to be, then he needs to be playing senior football on a regular basis.

Chances are likely to be limited at Ibrox this term, with Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, and Steven Davis acting as Gerrard’s go-to options in the centre of midfield.

Barjonas would play at Oldham, and you would assume that his manager would trust Kewell to help him grow properly given their time together at Anfield.

All in all, we think this would be a smart move.
