Forward set to exit Rangers on loan, Gerrard rates him highly – report
Rangers forward Josh McPake is set to exit Ibrox and join Greenock Morton on loan, according to the Scottish Sun.
The newspaper reports that Steven Gerrard rates McPake, 19, highly and wants to send him out on loan so that he can continue his development after a mixed temporary spell at Dundee last season.
The Scotland Under-19 forward made his senior debut for Rangers last season when he played in their Europa League qualifying campaign before joining the Dark Blues, where he made seven appearances in the Scottish Championship.
McPake was in Gerrard’s first-team squad during pre-season training and friendlies but now the decision has been taken that he should join Morton on loan.
It is not made clear whether McPake’s loan move to Morton is a season-long deal or just until January.
McPake’s deal at Ibrox expires in 2022 so this could be an ideal opportunity for the teenager to earn himself a new contract with the Glasgow giants.
If his move to Morton is a season-long one then he could return to Ibrox next summer with just one year left on his deal so securing fresh terms could be a priority for him.
Robby McCrorie and Andrew Dallas have both had recent loan spells at Morton with both of them earning plenty of first-team game-time and McCrorie going on to earn a call-up to the Scotland senior squad.
We hope McPake takes a similar route in the future but he needs to get his head down and really impress at Morton first.
