‘Closer and closer’ – Celtic legend makes claim about Rangers & Gerrard for 20/21 season
Kenny Dalglish claims Rangers are getting ‘closer and closer’ to challenging Celtic and bringing the Scottish Premiership title back to Ibrox
Rangers were 13 points behind Celtic when the Scottish season was ended early due to the coronavirus pandemic, albeit with a game in hand on their Glasgow rivals.
Celtic were awarded their ninth consecutive title, and ex-Hoops forward Dalglish believes that Rangers could be close to preventing it becoming (a disputed) 10-in-a-row.
Speaking to Go Radio (via Glasgow Live), Dalglish praised the job that Steven Gerrard has done at Ibrox, and specifically, how he has invested the money given to him.
He said, “I think Rangers have got stronger over the seasons since Steven has been there. They have supported Steven and he’s been able to invest money in a lot of players.
“He’s certainly been given the support and Steven has reacted and responded by making them a lot stronger. And they are getting closer and closer to competing with Celtic.
Dalglish also said that he hopes that both clubs can embark on successful European runs this term.
“They [Rangers] still have it all to do because Celtic are fantastic and Lenny is doing a fantastic job second time around and they are going for another three trophies plus the cup ties from last year.
“They were unlucky to get knocked out of the Champions League but last year they had a great European run so both of them have represented Scotland well in the European trophies last year.
“Hopefully they can do the same this year.”
Rangers look to continue their advancement in the Europa League against Willem II this week, with the Hoops joining the Gers in the Europa League having already been knocked out of the Champions League, losing 2-1 to Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros in the qualifiers.
The last time the Glasgow clubs met in the league, Rangers were victorious, with a Nikola Katic header securing 3 points for the Gers at Celtic Park. This result was an early signal that Rangers are going to be completing more closely with their old firm rivals.
However this came off the back of Gerrard’s side losing to their Glasgow rivals in the Scottish League Cup final, in a game which Rangers dominated.
A Morelos penalty miss and an offside Celtic goal saw the Gers denied silverware at the hands of their rivals again.
This season is critical for Rangers and for Steven Gerrard and we think that it could be the one when silverware is finally delivered.
