‘Absolutely catastrophic’ – Ibrox Exclusive: McLeish reacts to ‘bitter blow’ for Rangers star
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has claimed that Joe Aribo’s ongoing injury issues could have “absolutely catastrophic” consequences for Rangers and their title hopes.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss lavished praise on the Nigeria international, arguing that he is a “tremendous prospect” with great technical attributes.
The 24-year-old is expected to miss up to six weeks with an ankle injury, however, and could be a doubt for next month’s Old Firm clash at Parkhead.
And if he is absent for that match, McLeish believes that it will put his side at a considerable disadvantage.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “Aribo’s a tremendous prospect.
“He’s skilful, he’s technical.
“He can make a difference, and to lose players like that is a bitter blow.
“If we’re talking six weeks, that is absolutely catastrophic because Steve needs him If he is going to mount a serious challenge.”
Aribo had been showing fine form prior to picking up his complaint last month, scoring one in his first three Scottish Premiership appearances so far this term.
Following the midfielder’s injury, Steven Gerrard himself admitted that his spell on the sidelines would be a setback for the Gers, but was also eager to focus on the positives.
He said: “It is a big blow but it is actually good news as it could have required surgery.
“We hope he can be back in four weeks.”
