‘Unbelievable’ – Jermain Defoe offers Rangers star advice after ‘legend’ comparisons
Rangers forward Jermain Defoe has claimed that he can understand why Steven Gerrard didn’t want to compare Alfredo Morelos to Ally McCoist.
Comparisons began between the two after the Colombian went one goal behind McCoist’s European record with his 19th and 20th strikes against Lincoln Red Imps on Thursday.
Gerrard claimed after the game that Morelos has a long way to go before being in the same category as McCoist around Ibrox.
Defoe couldn’t hide how impressed he has been with Morelos, claiming his record his unbelievable since he arrived in Scotland.
“Everyone know that Alfredo has got potential and I’ve said it many times since I’ve been here, he has really impressed me,” he said via the Daily Record.
“He is always going to score goals and the record is unbelievable, but I can understand the manager not wanting to compare him to Super Ally, the legend.
“He’s got a long way to go. He’s a young lad and I don’t think it would be fair on him to be honest if you compare him.”
It has been a summer full of specualtion surrounding the South American, who has yet to seal a move away from Glasgow.
Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe have both arrived to offer reinforcements in the final third, and that has seen Morelos’ gametime suffer as a result.
The 24-year-old has featured in five of the first seven games this season and has only scored twice.
With Roofe going off injured against Lincoln though, it offers Morelos the perfect chance to kickstart his season with some goals against Hibernian on Sunday.
Defoe is spot on to advise Morelos to ignore the comparisons and just get on with his game, afterall, this is a great compliment that the suggestion has even arised.
