Free agent heads to Rangers after Gerrard green light, player turned down PL club – report
Ex-Arsenal forward Nathan Tormey has headed to Rangers for a trial after rejecting a new deal at the Emirates last season, according to the Sun.
The newspaper claims that Tormey, 20, turned down the chance to pen a three-year deal at the Emirates in favour of becoming a free agent.
It is understood that Steven Gerrard has given the green light for the attacker to train at Auchenhowie in a bid to win a permanent contract with the Scottish giants.
Tormey scored four goals in 15 Premier League 2 appearances for Arsenal’s Under-23s last season, with one of his goals coming against a Liverpool side that boasted the likes of Curtis Jones, Rhian Brewster and Ki-Jana Hoever.
The Rangers trialist is predominantly a left-winger but has been known to play on the right-hand side of the attack or as a centre-forward.
As he’s a free agent, it is definitely worth the Gers’ time in having a look at the available 20-year-old, who might be able to provide back-up to Gerrard’s first-team options.
According to Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough, as quoted by the Scottish Sun, Jordan Jones has been told to find a new club by Gerrard.
Jones and Tormey play in similar roles and Jones has barely been getting any game-time at Ibrox since his move there from Kilmarnock last year.
Tormey might be eyed up as a potential replacement for the Northern Ireland international because having a young up-and-coming player in that fringe role makes far more sense than having someone like Jones there.
In other Rangers news, there’s a player-plus-cash deal on the cards involving a forward and a midfielder.
