‘Sign of his character’ – Exclusive: Swiss journo hails Rangers new boy after ‘massive’ setback
Ibrox News recently conducted an exclusive interview with renowned journalist Hanspeter Kuenzler to get his views on Rangers new boy Cedric Itten. Kuenzler is a UK sport correspondent for Swiss publication Neue Zürcher Zeitung…
Rangers summer signing Cedric Itten is a “really strong character”, according to Swiss journalist Hanspeter Kuenzler.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung correspondent hailed the 23-year-old for his determination to come back from a potential career-ending injury in 2018 that left the forward “wrecked”.
Itten has endured a disrupted start to life in Glasgow since signing from Swiss side St. Gallen over the summer.
The forward was forced out of the Scottish Premiership clash against Hamilton at the end of August with a calf injury, and has played a full 90 minutes just once in the league since his arrival at the club.
But Kuenzler insists that he is not an injury-prone player.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “The one-off knocks haven’t really been an issue, no.
“He had a massive injury and was pretty wrecked in 2018. In a game at Lugano he was totally, recklessly attacked by a defender. He tore pretty much everything in his right knee, basically.
“It’s a sign of his character how he worked himself back into contention very quickly. Clearly his healing capability is pretty good too.
“I don’t think he’s often afflicted by small niggles, and he can come back from career-ending injury quickly and with strength. He’s clearly a really strong character.”
Itten has yet to find the back of the net in a Rangers shirt, but did lead the line in the 5-0 Europa League victory over Lincoln Red Imps on Thursday evening.
Last season, the Switzerland international hit 20 goals in 36 appearances for St. Gallen across all competitions.
