Report – Championship side plot raid to take Rangers player back to boyhood club
Middlesbrough are among the clubs who are keeping tabs on Rangers winger Jordan Jones, according to Sky Sports.
The 25-year-old has struggled to make an impact in Glasgow since signing from Kilmarnock on a free transfer last summer, and missed a significant chunk of last term with a serious knee injury that he sustained during the first Old Firm game of the campaign.
Subsequently, Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough has suggested that the wide man has been told by the Gers that he is free to find a new club if a suitable offer comes in for him before the transfer window closes in Scotland next month.
The Scottish Sun reported on Thursday that QPR are interested in Jones, with that piece also stating that the player could be used as a makeweight in any deal that takes Daniel Johnson from Preston North End to Ibrox.
Sky mention those to clubs in their own report, but also add Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough to the list of sides who have expressed an interest in signing him in the coming weeks.
As yet, it is understood that no concrete offer has been made for the ex-Killie talent.
Is a move to Middlesbrough a realistic option for Jones?
A switch to the Riverside would make a lot of sense, to be fair.
Despite playing for Northern Ireland, Jones was actually born in Redcar, and came through the academy at Boro before leaving on a free transfer to join Killie in 2016.
The Championship club have been touted as a potential destination for the winger in the past too.
As far back as December, a loan swoop was being mooted, but nothing came of it in the January window.
With just 15 appearances to his name for Rangers last season, and with no indication that he is any closer to a regular first team spot this time around, an exit could be Jones’ smartest option this summer.
If that is the case, why wouldn’t he want to go back to his boyhood club?
In other Rangers news, the Gers have a player-plus-cash deal on the cards, club ready to swap centre-mid & forward.
