Exclusive: Alex McLeish ‘surprised’ by Rangers telling Jordan Jones to find new club

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that he is “surprised” to see that Jordan Jones has been told to find a new club by Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss suggested that the winger has failed to live up to the “massive expectations” that came with his arrival in Glasgow, but also referenced his impressive pedigree.

According to Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough, the 25-year-old has had talks with Steven Gerrard, who has openly stated that he can leave Ibrox if the right opportunity presents itself before the end of the current transfer window.

And McLeish has admitted that he is a little taken aback by the update.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “I was a bit surprised.

“I can see why Steven would acquire his services because he gave Rangers a hard time back in the day when he played for Kilmarnock.

“But for some reason or other, it’s not gone the way he wanted it to. He’s always played at a good level, he’s an international, but it hasn’t quite worked out for him at Rangers.

“Sometimes that happens – you go to a club with massive expectations and it doesn’t quite work out. I’m not saying Jordan can’t handle that, but I would think that at this moment in time, he’s not shown enough to make him a big part of Steven’s plans.”

Jones joined the Gers from Kilmarnock on a free transfer last summer, but suffered a serious knee injury in the first Old Firm of last season.

As a result, he has played just 15 times in all competitions for Gerrard’s side, but has yet to make an appearance this season.
