‘Incredible’ – Exclusive: McLeish hails ‘outstanding’ Rangers ace Davis for int’l record
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has hailed Rangers midfielder Steven Davis for his “incredible” international appearance record.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers boss claimed that he has always been a fan of the Northern Ireland talent, and suggested that he is still an “outstanding performer”.
The 35-year-old matched Pat Jennings’ record tally of 119 caps for his country earlier this week, despite playing in a high energy central midfield role.
And McLeish has lavished him with praise for his achievement.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It’s quite an incredible feat when you think about.
“It’s really amazing. Steven has been some servant to his clubs and country.
“I’ve always liked him as a player. I liked him every since I was in the Premier League with Birmingham City, when he played for Fulham. I thought he was a great signing by Walter Smith when he brought him in first time round, and he really transformed Rangers’ midfield.
“That’s what we really need to see from Rangers if they’re to be successful – a midfield controller of the ilk that Steven is. Of course, he’s still there and he’s found a little bit of his top fitness again, and he is an outstanding performer.”
Davis has established himself as an integral member of Steven Gerrard’s starting XI again this season.
The veteran ace has featured in five of the Gers’ seven Scottish Premiership matches this term, and has started the last three on the bounce.
