Exclusive: Alex McLeish claims Rangers boss Gerrard needs to win a trophy this season
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard needs to break his silverware duck in Glasgow this season, according to Alex McLeish.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Gers manager – who won seven trophies with the club, including a domestic treble in 2003 – also argued that the 40-year-old has had to work hard to close the gap on bitter rivals Celtic.
The Hoops are currently chasing a 10th consecutive league title, and captured a historic treble treble last term.
Gerrard arrived in Scotland in 2018, but is still yet to get his hands on a trophy for the Gers.
But McLeish has suggested that has to change this term.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “Steven has come to Glasgow and probably needs to win some silverware this season.
“It’s been difficult to catch and keep up with Celtic. They’ve obviously dominated while Rangers were out of the league and in that time they would have made a lot of money in terms of the difference between the two clubs.
“It’s not really a level playing field as such since Rangers have come back in.
“They are playing catch up and they are getting closer. They blew it after the winter break last year and they started to drop points to the smaller teams. I think that’s probably where it was difficult for Steven.”
Rangers haven’t won a Scottish Premiership title since 2011.
The Gers also managed to pick up a Scottish League Cup that year, completing a domestic double for the second consecutive season.
In other Rangers news, McLeish claims Ryan Jack is becoming ‘more and more confident’ for the Gers.
