Exclusive: Alex McLeish backs Rangers new boy Roofe to trouble defences in a ‘big way’

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has claimed that Rangers new boy Kemar Roofe can trouble Scottish defences in a “big way” this season.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox New, the former Gers boss also stated that the ex-Leeds United hitman will be “delighted” to have opened his account for his new club in the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock last month.

The 27-year-old joined Steven Gerrard’s men from Anderlecht earlier this summer in a deal worth around £4.5 million.

And McLeish is optimistic about the impact he can make in Glasgow.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “I watched him, was watching the Championship, keeping in touch with the game, and Roofe was a player I thought: ‘This guy’s got something,’ when he was playing in that Leeds team.

“When I saw Steven had got him, I’m not saying he knows his way around Scottish boxes but he’s got the gravitas to be on that field of play and worry defenders in a big way.

“That was one of the things I was hoping that Steven would do this year, he needed to bolster the front line.

“Roofe getting his goal against Killie, he’ll be delighted with that at such an early stage of his Rangers career.”

Roofe has featured in four Scottish Premiership matches for Rangers so far, starting in his two most recent outings.

Last season, the striker hit seven goals in 16 appearances for Anderlecht, but struggled with an ankle injury during a tumultuous campaign.
