Belgian journalist Pieter-Jan Calcoen has claimed that Rangers striker Kemar Roofe was a “disappointment” during his spell with Anderlecht.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the reliable reporter suggested that the 27-year-old’s wages were too high to justify his output on the continent.

Roofe joined Anderlecht from Leeds United last summer, but was limited to just 16 appearances in all competitions last term because of injury.

And despite scoring seven goals over the course of those outings, Calcoen has admitted that Roofe thoroughly underwhelmed in Belgium.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “In Anderlecht, he was a bit of a disappointment.

“He came already injured. When they bought him from Leeds, he was out for several weeks so his start was really difficult.

“The games he played he was okay, but the biggest problem was that he earned more than £1.7 million in the year. It was bit too much for what he brought to Anderlecht.

“He only had seven goals. He was injured a lot. I won’t say he’s a bad player, but he didn’t bring to Anderlecht what we expected him to.”

Rangers

Roofe joined the Gers for a fee of around £4.5 million earlier this summer, and has so far made four appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side.

He scored his first goal for the Glaswegian giants in the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock last month, and has helped Rangers to an unbeaten start their Scottish Premiership campaign.
