Ibrox Exclusive: McAvennie claims Morelos could upset Rangers dressing room if he stays

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish international Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Frank McAvennie has claimed that Alfredo Morelos could end up “upsetting” the Rangers dressing room if he doesn’t seal his exit from the club this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Celtic forward argued that there is “only so much” Steven Gerrard can do to placate the Colombian if he has decided that he wants to seek a fresh challenge elsewhere in the coming weeks.

According to The Scottish Sun, FC Porto have emerged as the latest side to take an interest in signing the 24-year-old.

Gers boss Gerrard admitted last month that the South American has had his head turned by the prospect of an exit from Ibrox.

And McAvennie has suggested that if that is the case, the manager could be fighting a losing battle to refocus the hitman.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “There’s only so much a manager can do if his head has been turned.

“There’s only so much you can do. There’s only so much that the fans will accept of that.

“He’s got to make his own decisions, but Rangers have to try and get their head down and play because they need to stop Celtic.

“If he doesn’t play I think he’ll be upsetting the dressing room. You don’t want players like that around the club and he could end up having a detrimental effect.”

Morelos has failed to feature in each of the Gers’ last two Scottish Premiership matches.

The forward made the bench for Saturday’s game against Hamilton after Gerrard praised his increased “application” in training, but was still unable to get onto the pitch in the 2-0 win.

In other Rangers news, Leon Balogun has started life in Glasgow brilliantly.
