Report – Morelos back in contention for Rangers spot v Hamilton

Alfredo Morelos will be back in contention for a starting spot when Rangers face Hamilton this weekend, according to the Daily Record.

The Colombian was unexpectedly left out of Steven Gerrard’s match day squad for the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock last time out, with the boss claiming that the decision had been an “easy” one.

The 24-year-old had started all of Rangers’ prior games this season.

In his absence, Kemar Roofe made his full debut for the club, scoring his first goal for the Gers in a 2-0 win.

But despite continued speculation surrounding his future at Ibrox – including a recent report from Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra suggesting that he has openly asked for the Gers to accept an offer for him from French club Lille – it is understood that Morelos has been told that he is expected to get his head down and compete for a starting role until the point at which his exit may be facilitated.

In the short term, that means that the hitman could be given an opportunity to prove himself on Saturday afternoon against the Accies.

Should Morelos be handed a start against Hamilton?

As the old adage goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

With that in mind, Steven Gerrard probably shouldn’t think about tinkering with his lineup too much this weekend, especially if that means dropping Roofe.

The former Leeds United man looked good on his full debut.

Roofe managed a pass completion rate of 90%, as well as a dribble success rate of 100%, as per Wyscout.

Moreover, his shot accuracy was 14.3% higher than Morelos’ average this season.

There’s been too much inconsistency in the Colombian’s game of late to properly trust him with a starting spot, especially when his replacement is looking so sharp.

A spot on the bench might be more realistic, but putting him in from the start would be a real slight on Roofe – who has done absolutely nothing wrong.

In other Rangers news, Alex Bruce has hailed this player’s start to the season.
