Report: Marseille want to sign Morelos on loan, Rangers only interested in permanent sale

Marseille have held discussions with Rangers as they aim to sign Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos on loan, according to Le10Sport.

The French news outlet reports that Lille have been interested in signing Morelos, 24, this summer but have been joined in the race for the forward’s signature by their Ligue 1 rivals Marseille.

Although the French club, managed by ex-Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas, want Morelos on loan, Le10Sport says that Rangers are only interested in selling the Colombia international on a permanent basis before the transfer window closes.

Steven Gerrard dropped Morelos from his matchday squad as Rangers beat Kilmarnock last week amid speculation surrounding the controversial striker’s future.

James McFadden told Sky Sports that Gerrard’s decision was justified because Morelos has looked “unfit” and “unwilling to work for the team” since January.

Morelos has failed to score in 12 of his last 13 Scottish Premiership appearances, with his two goals against St Johnstone earlier this month being the only times he’s found the net in the league in 2020.

Gers boss Gerrard said last week that Morelos has had his “head turned” by speculation surrounding his future and it seems that the Glasgow giants are very keen to offload him.

Morelos has been a lethal finisher for Rangers over the past few seasons, netting a total of 79 goals in 142 appearances across all competitions.

However, none of those goals have been against rivals Celtic while the ex-HJK Helsinki striker has also been sent off twice in Old Firm matches and four times against Aberdeen [transfermarkt].

Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten have been brought in by Gerrard this summer to add to his options up front.

Although it would be a shame to see Morelos leave Rangers after so many strong performances over the last three years, it does seem as though his cycle at the club has come to an end.

Unfortunately, it does not look as though Morelos is leaving in the best possible way based on Gerrard’s quotes about him getting his head turned.
