Ibrox Exclusive: McAvennie praises Roofe for goal on Rangers full debut
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish international Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Frank McAvennie has praised Rangers new boy Kemar Roofe for opening his Gers account so early in his Ibrox career.
Speaking to Ibrox News, the ex-Celtic striker claimed that the pressure of moving to a club the size of his former Old Firm rivals could leave a forward in “trouble” if he doesn’t hit the ground running.
Roofe was handed his full debut by Steven Gerrard in the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock last weekend, and impressed with a well-taken strike.
That goal was his first in a Rangers shirt, and McAvennie has claimed that it will make things a lot easier for the former Leeds United striker going forward – especially if he is expected to step in for the out-of-favour Alfredo Morelos.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It’s always good to get your first goal when you go to a new club, especially one as big as Rangers.
“It doesn’t matter how you play, for a striker the main thing is getting goals. It’s a good start for the boy.
“By all account Morelos is down the pecking order now, so it looks like the boy is going to get a run in the team. As a striker, he’ll be happy with that.
“You’ve got to hit the ground running or you’re in trouble. He’ll be alright because he’s scored. Rangers have done well.”
Roofe signed for the Gers from Anderlecht earlier this month for a fee of around £4.5 million.
He scored seven goals in 16 games in Belgium last season.
In other Rangers news, Bruce claims Rangers will want to ‘build team around’ this player.
