Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has claimed that Rangers could balance their books for an entire season by selling Glen Kamara this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News editor Jason Jones, the University of Liverpool lecturer suggested that the vast profits the Gers could stand to make from selling the Finland international could cancel out their average annual losses.

A recent report from 90min suggested that a number of clubs from England and Eastern Europe are keeping tabs on the midfielder, with Steven Gerrard’s men potentially in a position where they could be forced to sell if they receive an offer of around £10 million.

But while Maguire doesn’t believe that things are that desperate in Glasgow, he has pointed out how beneficial offloading Kamara could be from a purely financial point of view.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It really depends on how much a replacement would cost. There’s issues in terms of wages, and whether there would have to be more wages going out.

“Rangers have been losing a lot of money. If you take the last three years and put them together, they’ve been averaging £10 million a year losses. Selling him could effectively wipe out the losses for a single season. I think that will be something that board will be aware of.

“Steven Gerrard will, I suspect, be in a strong negotiating position himself with the board. If he doesn’t want the player to go, then I think he’ll be able to put his foot down.

“Will they be whispering in his ear that it would be nice to balance the books at some point? Yes, but I suspect that the Rangers board think that this season, more than any other, is a very good one to win the Premiership because they don’t want Celtic to win 10-in-a-row.”

Kamara joined Rangers for a nominal fee of around £50,000 from Dundee in January of last year.

He has gone on to make 60 appearances for the Gers so far in his career with the club.
