Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce claims Rangers will want to ‘build team around’ Barisic
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has claimed that Borna Barisic is a player who Rangers can “build a team around”.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender claimed that the Croatia international fulfils a “vital” role for the Gers.
Barisic was on top form in last Wednesday’s clash against St. Johnstone, scoring the opener from a sublime free-kick before turning provider for Ryan Kent with a pinpoint accurate cutback.
He was more subdued in the disappointing 0-0 against Livingston but came closest to scoring with a free-kick that was tipped onto the bar by Maksymilian Stryjek.
According to Football Insider, the defender is being eyed up for a potential swoop by Leeds United this summer, but Bruce has emphasised the significance of retaining his services in the coming weeks.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “Rangers need to keep hold of him. And if they do keep hold of him, I know he’s been linked with a move elsewhere, he’s the kind of player that Steven will want to build a team around.
“He’s a really important member of this Rangers side.
“Modern full-backs, we’ve see what they bring to teams, it’s an absolutely vital position on the pitch.
“The fact that Steven’s got two good established players, he knows what he’s going to get out of them, it’s positive for the club moving forward.”
Barisic enjoyed a breakout season for Rangers last term, registering 14 assists in all competitions.
It is understood that Rangers will demand upwards of £8 million if they are to sell the full-back, who cost them £2.2 million in 2018.
