‘It is a worry’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Pundit reacts to latest injury for Rangers hitman Defoe
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has claimed that Jermain Defoe’s latest injury issue is a “worry” for Rangers, especially after the disappointing 0-0 v Livingston on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender argued that “niggly” complaints are an unfortunate part of the game when a player reaches his late 30s.
The 37-year-old is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury that he picked up during a preseason friendly against Motherwell.
However, Bruce is hopeful that he can bounce back and continue to be an important player for the Gers in the twilight of his career.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It is a worry, obviously.
“When you get to Jermain’s age, unfortunately, the body isn’t what it once was.
“He’s been picking up a few injuries, but they’ll just be hoping, for Rangers’ sake, that he can bounce back.
“Everybody knows that when he’s fit he scores goals and he gives Gerrard another massive option up top when they’re struggling.
“I think it’s just a case of getting over these niggly little injuries, and hopefully they can get him back as soon as possible. They need him”
Defoe has yet to feature for Rangers this season, but has played a big role for Steven Gerrard’s men since arriving from Bournemouth in January 2019, striking 25 times in 52 outings for the Gers, including 17 in 32 last season.
Competition for places up front has increased dramatically at Ibrox this season, however, with Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten both arriving on permanent deals.
