Rangers Exclusive: Pundit claims Gerrard faces ‘nice headache’ over goalkeeping situation
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has claimed that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will be facing a “nice headache” over his current goalkeeping situation.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that it would be harsh to drop Jon McLaughlin after two consecutive clean sheets, but also pointed out how popular regular number one Allan McGregor is in Glasgow.
The veteran stopper has been sidelined since picking up a knock in the Europa League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last week.
In his absence, summer signing McLaughlin has stepped up to the plate, and has looked dependable and more than capable during two consecutive 3-0 victories over St. Mirren and St. Johnstone.
The Scotland international’s form has been so good, in fact, that it’s got Bruce questioning whether or not McGregor should walk straight back into the starting XI.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It’s been a great start defensively, and I’m sure Steven will be delighted.
“He’s obviously worked on a few things that he was disappointed with last season, and he’ll be hoping that the good work can continue.
“It’s a little bit difficult, isn’t it? Greegsy’s tried and trusted. He’s very well thought of up in Glasgow.
“It’d be harsh to drop McLaughlin after two clean sheets, but it’s definitely a nice headache for Steven to have.”
McLaughlin is yet to concede a goal during his Rangers career, including his appearances in preseason.
The only goal that the Gers have conceded competitively this season came in the 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last week, with McGregor between the sticks for that one.
