Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce backs Balogun experience to be useful asset for Rangers
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Leon Balogun’s experience could be a useful tool for Rangers this season, according to Alex Bruce.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock centre-back claimed that the 32-year-old’s age could actually prove to be advantageous for the Gers as they look to solidify the heart of defence.
Steven Gerrard’s men completed a free transfer for the Nigeria international from Brighton last week.
Balogun spent the second half of last season on loan at Championship outfit Wigan Athletic.
And Bruce believes that his switch to Glasgow could prove to be a mutually beneficial one.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “He’s a solid player in an area of the team that needed strengthening so it’s a good move for both parties.
“It’ll be interesting to see how he does up there. I think at centre-half, you need a bit of experience.
“When you get to certain age and your legs don’t move like they used to, some defenders get better, maybe as they get into their early 30s.
“Hopefully Balogun can come in and give them a good bit of service for the next few years, and he could be a good bit of business, especially if he brings that bit of experience as well.”
As well as having 31 Nigeria caps to his name, Balogun has also enjoyed several spells with various Bundesliga clubs.
The towering centre-back made 11 appearances for Wigan after arriving at the club in January, helping the Latics to six clean sheets in that spell.
