Alex Rae claims Rangers may not be able to afford Lewis Ferguson in future

Rangers might not be able to afford Lewis Ferguson if they wait to sign him beyond this summer, according to Alex Rae.

The Scottish Sun reported back in May that the Aberdeen midfielder had emerged as a potential target for the Gers in the transfer window.

But as yet, there has been no indication that the club plan on making good on that interest.

And Rae has outlined the need to act swiftly if Steven Gerrard’s men are serious about securing his services.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “Rangers are strong in midfield, I’m not sure if Lewis would step straight into the team if he was signed right now.

“But if you wait for a few years then there’s a real possibility that you won’t be able to afford him. He’ll only get better.

“The boy can put his foot in, is aggressive, has a good physical presence, and has a goal in him.

“Lewis has got a bit of devilment about him and I like that about him.”

Should Rangers make a move for Ferguson?

You would probably argue that with the seemingly imminent arrival of South Africa international Bongani Zungu, plus the variety of options Gerrard already has in the centre of the park, Ferguson would be a target that the Gers could afford to pass up on this summer.

That’s not to say he is a bad player.

Over the course of the 2019/20 season, Ferguson averaged 3.28 dribbles per match, as well as winning 23.93 duels, and making 4.15 interceptions, as per Wyscout.

As a point of reference, Glen Kamara‘s equivalent stats in those areas were  2.48, 17.25, and 3.88 respectively.

But right now, at this specific moment in time, the Gers don’t need Ferguson as much as they need strengthen other areas of their squad.

For that reason alone, he probably won’t be making the move to Ibrox any time soon.
