‘Super signing’ – These Rangers fans react to confirmation of Balogun arrival

Rangers have announced the signing of defender Leon Balogun, and it’s safe to say that supporters are absolutely delighted.

The 32-year-old is a 31-cap Nigeria who will join the Gers from Brighton on a one-year deal, with the option for it to be extended for another year if he is a success at Ibrox.

Balogun signed for Wigan Athletic on loan in January, and featured in 11 Championship matches over the second half of the season.

The Latics have been hit with administration in recent weeks, however, and face the likelihood that they will be relegated from the Championship unless they have an appeal against their mandatory 12 point deduction is successful.

That unfortunate saga has ruled out the prospect of Balogun re-signing for the English club, and has paved the way for him to make a switch to Ibrox.

Despite his international career with Nigeria, Balogun was actually born in Germany, and played for a variety of Bundesliga sides before making the switch to England.

The towering defender enjoyed a good spell of form with Wigan, and has averaged more interceptions per game than Connor Goldson, as well as making more accurate long passes per 90 minutes, as per Wyscout.

With Nikola Katic out for the foreseeable future due to a ligament injury, this feels like a shrewd piece of business from the Gers, and one that could provide real quality competition at the heart of defence ahead of a crucial league campaign.
