‘Big blow’ – Ibrox Exclusive: Defoe injury represents setback for Rangers, claims Bruce

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has claimed that Jermain Defoe’s latest injury setback will represent a “big blow” for Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender argued that the complaint was an inevitable consequence of the 37-year-old’s age.

Defoe picked up a hamstring issue in the 4-0 behind-closed-doors win over Motherwell earlier in the week.

And Bruce has suggested that his absence will be acutely felt by the Gers as they prepare to gear up for the restart of the Scottish Premiership season next weekend.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “The fact that Jermain keeps getting these niggly little injuries just goes to show that age creeps up on you.

“He’s gone through his whole career and been okay with injuries, but he keeps picking up these little calves, hamstrings, things like that.

“It’s obviously a big blow for Steven and for Rangers because they’ll want a Jermain Defoe who is fully fit, because when he’s fit he will score goals, there’s no doubt about it.”

Defoe has discovered a new lease of life since joining Rangers from Bournemouth last January.

The veteran hitman has struck 25 goals in 52 outings for the Gers in all competitions, including 17 in 32 appearances in 2019/20 alone.
