Ibrox View: Exciting news for Gers fans from SPFL chief executive ahead of Old Firm clash

With the Premiership ended early, we’ve been getting our football fix from the Championship and the Premier League.

The unsurprising news is that it’s flat and hollow without fans in the ground.

Pundits talk about the new normal but others in the game have said it how it is. Man United’s Ed Woodward was one when he said, “Football is nothing without fans”.

We’re still deeply frustrated that the top-two tiers in England are playing on and without a hitch, while the top tier in Scotland was unceremoniously ditched.

However, it’s not the same. Football without fans is like being a foodie and then losing your sense of taste.

We already know that the start of next season will happen behind closed doors in Scotland.

That’s a challenge for Steven Gerrard in what is a hugely important season both for him and the club, with a fast start absolutely essential.

However, there is some exciting news for football and for Gers fans from SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster.

As reported by the Scottish Sun, he has said that he’s hopeful that fans could be allowed in stadiums by the time Rangers travel to Celtic for the first Old Firm clash of the season.

If that’s the case, we just hope that Celtic do the right thing and let the Gers fans help create an atmosphere.

With the first two months set to play behind closed doors, it means the earliest that Gers fans could be back is the Friday night game against Ross County on October 2.

That’s about as good as we could possibly hope for at the moment and it means that football behind closed doors in Scotland could be very short-lived.

We hope so. Football might be a little more than nothing without fans, but it’s certainly not the game that we all love.
