Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce would be ‘very surprised’ if Gerrard left Rangers in near future
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has suggested that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard could be tempted by the offer of a job in the Premier League, depending on the project.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, however, the former Kilmarnock defender claimed that he would be “very surprised” if 40-year-old left the Gers any time soon.
Gerrard was recently approached by Championship outfit Birmingham City, according to Football Insider, but is understood to have turned down the role with little hesitation.
And Bruce has argued that the Gers boss will be keen to finish what he has started at Ibrox by knocking Celtic off their perch.
When asked whether Gerrard would be tempted to leave Rangers if an offer came in from the Premier League during an interview with Ibrox News, Bruce said: “Maybe, maybe – I think it depends on the project that’s in place.
“But like I say, I think it would be a little bit unrealistic for him to leave so soon.
“Rangers are a massive club and he’s put the foundations in there for them to go and have a really good crack at Celtic and stop them winning 10-in-a-row.
“I’d be very surprised if he left now. It doesn’t seem like the right time.”
Gerrard has approached the summer transfer window at quite a canter as he looks to build a squad capable of closing the gap on the Hoops next season.
Deals have already been completed for Ianis Hagi, Jon McLaughlin, and Calvin Bassey, as well as new contracts being handed to impressive youngsters Robby McCrorie and Stephen Kelly.
In other Rangers news, Ibrox View: Stats suggest Bassey could challenge for Rangers starting role in near future.
