Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce praises Rangers for signing McLaughlin – ‘Good little piece of business’
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has praised Rangers for signing Scotland international goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that the move represents “good business” for the Gers.
The 32-year-old arrived in Glasgow on a free transfer from Sunderland earlier this week, and has agreed a two-year deal with Steven Gerrard’s men.
And Bruce believes that bringing in a keeper of McLaughlin’s calibre a cover for veteran stopper Allan McGregor is a great decision.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “Yeah, it’s good business.
“Obviously, having backup to McGregor is going to be key to keep him sharp and to keep him going. It’s a good little piece of business by Rangers.
“Of course, when a player [McGregor] gets older you have to make those plans, and I’m sure Steven will be keeping an eye on it, but only Steven will know.
“Obviously with goalkeepers they can last a little bit longer than outfield players, so I’m sure if he keeps performing to the levels that he has he’s got a couple of years left in him yet.”
McLaughlin had been a mainstay for Sunderland over the past couple of seasons, making 90 appearances for the Black Cats since joining from Hearts in 2018.
Over the course of his time in the Scottish Premiership, the international stopper conceded 33 goals in 29 outings.
