Report – Rangers set to ‘reignite’ interest in Kemar Roofe this summer
Rangers are set to reignite their interest in former Leeds United striker Kemar Roofe if Alfredo Morelos leaves this summer, according to the Scottish Sun.
The 27-year-old joined Anderlecht last summer in a deal worth around £7 million, with the national outlet pointing out that Steven Gerrard tried and failed to lure him to Ibrox 12 months ago.
At that time, the draw of European football is understood to be a a major deciding factor for the hitman.
But the Belgian outfit, who are currently under the tutelage of ex-Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, failed to even qualify for the Europa League for next season.
Taking that into account, it is understood that the Gers could look to launch a second bid for the forward, especially if Morelos leaves the club in the coming weeks.
Wealthy Qatari club Al-Duhail have emerged as the latest in a long line of prospective suitors for the Colombian, as per the Daily Mail.
Is Roofe good enough to replace Morelos?
He certainly has good pedigree.
His total of 15 Championship goals last season was a key factor in helping the Whites to push all the way for promotion.
And he’s done well in Belgium too, registering seven goals and three assists in 16 outings, despite being sidelined with a calf injury since December.
Roofe’s stats make for interesting reading as well.
According to Wyscout, his shot accuracy this season has been 6.9% better than Morelos’, while he also has a higher pass completion rate, and a higher successful dribble rate.
Admittedly, his xG and actual goals per game are lower, but bearing in mind his other stats, there’s no reason to believe that he couldn’t flourish if he was presented with the same level of creative support that Morelos receives.
We think Roofe would be a very good signing if he is available.
