Ibrox Exclusive: Rangers ace Defoe outlines coaching aspirations, Bruce reacts

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has claimed that veteran Rangers striker would have plenty to offer as a coach.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the Kilmarnock did, however, suggest that the 37-year-old’s distinguished career wouldn’t necessarily guarantee him success behind the scenes at a club.

Defoe recently told talkSPORT that he has had a change of heart about moving into coaching when he eventually hangs up his boots, and is keen to make the transition into a backroom role.

The ex-England international has admitted that he was doubtful about becoming a coach because of a lack of opportunities for black ex-professionals.

But Bruce is in favour of his U-turn – although he has also issued something of a warning to the hitman.

When asked whether Defoe would make a good coach during an interview with Ibrox News, he said: “In terms of being a striking coach or something, maybe.

“Obviously he knows where the back of the net is and he was an intelligent footballer.

“However, just because you’re a good footballer, a clever footballer, and a good strike – being a coach is a totally different ball game. But only time will tell.

“If he wants to make that step across he’s got bags of experience from the playing side of things that he can pass down to younger players, so let’s hope for his sake he can grab the coaching reins and do a good job.”

Despite his age, Defoe has continued to impress during his spell with Rangers.

The forward has hit 17 goals in 32 appearances for the Gers this season, and has a tally of 25 goals in 52 outings overall.
