Report – Rangers interested in free swoop for ex-Man United starlet Dion McGhee

Rangers are interested in signing ex-Manchester United midfielder Dion McGhee, according to the Daily Star

The 19-year-old was released by his boyhood club this week after 13 years on the books at Old Trafford.

But it is understood that he is already attracting interest from a host of sides, with the Gers firmly in the race for his signature.

Steven Gerrard’s men will face competition across Europe if they are to snap up the starlet this summer, however.

The Star also suggest that Watford, West Ham, and Derby County are all eager to complete a free transfer for the youngster.

Outside of England, McGhee is said to be attracting attention from Portuguese duo FC Porto and Benfica, as well as Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice and Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.

The midfielder generally operates in an attacking role, and made nine appearances for United’s U23s this season.

Would McGhee be a good signing for the Gers?

The youngster doesn’t have much in the way of experience, but his potential is obvious.

For one thing, the calibre of club chasing him speaks volumes as to just how highly he is rated.

He may not have broken through into the senior side at Old Trafford, but when you consider the fact that he has the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, and Juan Mata ahead of him in the pecking order, there’s no real shame in that.

McGhee is versatile though, and can play at left-back or on the right wing, where he likes to cut inside on his favoured left foot.

His dribble success rate and total action success rate have both been higher than Ryan Kent’s this season, as per Wyscout, and while it’s true that he has a lot of growing left to do, there’s no reason to believe that he can’t kick on and become a top talent.

Landing him won’t be easy, but hopefully the lure of having Steven Gerrard in the dugout – one of the finest English midfielders of his generation – could help give us the edge.

In other Rangers news, Billy Dodds claims Lyndon Dykes would be ‘perfect buy’ for Rangers this summer.
