Gerrard claims Rangers new boy Bassey will ‘surprise a few people’

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has claimed that new signing Calvin Bassey is “going to surprise a few people”.

The full-back is set to join up with the Gers after agreeing a pre-contract agreement at Ibrox, and will leave current club Leicester City in the coming weeks.

And Gerrard is convinced that he can make a serious impact in Glasgow.

Speaking to Rangers TV, he said: “Calvin is going to surprise a few people.

“Not many people know the name but we have tracked him for some time. We’ve watched him a lot and he’s a fantastic talent. He’s big, strong, quick and aggressive. He’s excellent in one v one situations.

“Calvin can play in two or three different positions and always has a smile on his face. He is your modern-day, powerful full-back. I’m looking forward to seeing how people take to him.

“I think when they’ve watched him quite a bit, they’ll be as excited as I am.”

How much of an impact can Bassey make?

In many ways, the 20-year-old is joining Rangers in a perfect position.

With Borna Barisic undoubtably Gerrard’s number one at left-back, there’s not an immediate pressure for him to hit the ground running.

You would hope that his age and relative inexperience – having yet to make a senior appearance for the Foxes – will afford him a little bit of leeway from supporters and coaches alike.

That being said, Gerrard is excited about him, and we are too.

Ibrox News has already taken an in-depth look at the sort of player Bassey is, and the early signs are promising.

Brave in the tackle and comfortable on the ball, the youngster likes to get forward at any and every opportunity, and is blessed with a mean delivery too.

Clearly, he is a signing that has been made with on eye on the future, but there is no reason to believe that he can’t kick on and be a real asset next season too.
