Report – Rangers to play Europa Leg second leg v Bayer Leverkusen at neutral venue

Rangers are set to play their Europa League round of 16 second leg clash against Bayer Leverkusen at a neutral venue, according to the Scottish Sun.

The Gers find themselves 3-1 behind in the tie following their first leg meeting at Ibrox in March.

That was the last match to be played in Scotland before the Coronavirus pandemic caused competitive action to be suspended.

Since then, there has been no concrete indication as to whether or not the return fixture would be able to go ahead.

An announcement on the matter is due from UEFA next week, with the governing body expected to push ahead with plans to conclude both the Champions League and the Europa League later this summer.

A date of August 6th has been preliminarily outlined, as have four stadiums in the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Germany.

The four grounds used will be in Cologne, Dusseldorf, Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen, with all games behind closed doors.

You could certainly argue the pros and cons of UEFA’s plan.
On the one hand, it will be a major boost to have the opportunity to finish the tie on the pitch as initially planned, and the fact that it would be played at a neutral venue would negate any home advantage that Leverkusen would have in the second leg.
But, on the other hand, it would a huge ask for us to travel to Germany and get a result.
Assuming that it is safe and we are cleared to do so, this is a Leverkusen side that have been back at it for weeks already, and will have completed their Bundesliga campaign in the gap between the first and second legs.
By contrast, our most recent matches would be the original meeting back in March.
With that in mind, it would be great to see the lads back in action, but it would also be worth adjusting our expectations accordingly.
