Peterborough chief MacAnthony claims reported Rangers target Toney will not be sold on the cheap

Rangers will have to spend big to land reported target Ivan Toney this summer, according to Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

The Gers are understood to be one of a number of clubs who are keeping tabs on the 24-year-old, who has hit 26 goals in all competitions this season.

With his current employers falling foul of the EFL’s decision to finish the English League One season on a points per game basis, denying them a shot at promotion this term, MacAnthony has admitted that the hitman is highly likely to leave in the coming weeks.

But the senior figure has also suggested any move for the former Newcastle United talent will require a substantial offer.

Speaking on Sky Sports‘ The Football Show (Wednesday 10th June, Sky Sports News, 9am), he said: “We had multiple clubs try and buy him in January, we promised Ivan if we weren’t in the Championship next season we would sell him.

“We don’t sell our players cheap, the pandemic won’t affect that.

“I can envisage he will probably go to the top two or three Championship clubs if not the bottom ten Premier League clubs.

“I think some of the Premier League clubs won’t do as much international shopping and might go domestic, and Ivan’s physicality is suited to playing at the highest level.”

Would Toney be a good signing for the Gers?

There aren’t too many players in Britain who have been as prolific as the 24-year-old this season.

26 goals in 39 outings is a formidable record, and he also averages more successful dribbles and aerial duels won per game than Alfredo Morelos, as per Wyscout.

Whether he would be worth the exorbitant fee that Peterborough would be demanding is another debate, however.

There is always a gamble involved with bringing in a player from the lower leagues of English football, and it is understood that Brentford had an £8 million bid rejected for him back in January.

Realistically, the Gers would be looking at an eight-figure sum for the striker, comfortably, and that might be too much of an ask, especially given the financial impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.
