Andy Halliday hails Rangers ace Morelos for ‘remarkable’ goalscoring talent
Andy Halliday has claimed that Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is a a “remarkable” talent when he is in top form.
The Ibrox utility man, who is set to leave the club this summer, also suggested that he sees Morelos’ future in Glasgow, despite widespread speculation about a potential exit in the coming months.
The Colombian has hit 29 goals in all competitions this season, but just one of those has come in 2020, and his personal slump in form coincided with the collapse of the Gers’ title challenge.
But Halliday has heaped praise on the 23-year-old, claiming that his work ethic has never dropped during his dip in output.
As quoted by the Scottish Sun, he said: “I’ve played with a lot of characters and there’s no doubt Alfredo is a crackpot.
“But his application in training every single day is second to none. I never looked at him and thought, ‘his mind is elsewhere.’ He’s human, his form dips like everyone else. His form for the first 18 months of Steven Gerrard’s reign was remarkable.
“I’ve played with a lot of good strikers, but I don’t think I’ve played with any who were in the kind of form he was for that 18 month period.
“I see his future at Ibrox and I hope Rangers keep a hold of him because I’m sure he will have plenty of suitors as well.”
Are Halliday’s comments justified?
Nobody is better placed to comment on a player than a teammate who sees him everyday in training.
Morelos might be a temperamental character, both in terms of his discipline and his goalscoring exploits, but one thing that has never really been in doubt is his commitment to the cause at Ibrox.
Halliday’s comments seem to support that standpoint, while his suggestion that Morelos’ future could still be in Glasgow is cause for cautious optimism.
If he stays this summer, and if he can recapture the form that saw him hit 28 goals in all competitions before January this term, Morelos can still be the most potent weapon in Steven Gerrard’s arsenal as we bid to prevent 10-in-a-row next season.
