Stuart McCall claims free transfers could hold key to Rangers title success next term

Rangers don’t have to spend a fortune to overtake Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race next season, according to Stuart McCall.

The Gers finished 13 points behind the their bitter rivals this term, with the season curtailed early as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

But the former Ibrox boss, who now manages Bradford City, has claimed that Steven Gerrard can overhaul the sizeable gap with a number of well-researched, cheap signings this summer.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “Last season was huge for him [Gerrard], but this one is going to be massive.

“That’s why the players he brings to the club this summer need to be capable of handling everything which will come their way. I’m not talking about spending millions, either.

“The Covid-19 crisis means there won’t be as much money circulating in the game as there used to be. In any case, spending £5m on a player doesn’t guarantee that he’s going to be the answer.

“In fact, free transfers could be the way to go as long as your scouting and background checks are done properly because there will be a lot of free agents looking for a club this summer.”

Can Gerrard win the league with free transfers next season?

With enough scouting work and some thorough research, there could be some really good deals available to the Gers this summer.

A consequence of this ongoing global health crisis is that the transfer market will almost certainly be at the cheapest it has been for quite some time.

We’ve already seen Football Insider report that the Gers have had to slash their asking price for Alfredo Morelos, and it’s probably safe to assume that a lot of clubs will be in similar positions.

The delayed finish to domestic campaigns in a number of countries could also leave players approaching the end of their contracts this summer in a precarious position, and it’s not out of the question to think that there could be a real scramble to snap up a whole host of free agents over the coming weeks.

They might not necessarily all be free transfers, but McCall is right, there are good deals out there to be had if the Gers know where to look.
