Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce claims Rangers may struggle to keep Goldson this summer
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has claimed that Rangers may struggle to keep hold of Connor Goldson this summer if the centre-back has his head turned by the prospect of a move to the Premier League.
Speaking to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that the lure of a considerable pay hike could be too strong for the 27-year-old to ignore.
A number of English clubs are said to be keeping tabs on him, with West Ham, Leeds United, West Brom, and Fulham all reported to be keen, as per Football Insider.
And Bruce has argued that the Gers may have a hard time hanging on to their first team regular, no matter how much they might want to.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “I’m sure they would love to offer him a new contract, but can they compete with Premier League clubs if they come in and offer him a lot of money?
“If a club wants him and you’ve got the chance to go to the Premier League and double, triple your wages, whatever it might be, it’s a difficult one to try and keep hold of a player if he gets his head turned like that.
“I think Rangers would struggle to compete with Premier League clubs, purely because of their finances.
“It’s a really difficult scenario for them.”
Goldson joined the Gers from Brighton for a fee of around £3 million back in 2018, and has gone on to make 105 appearances for the Glaswegian giants.
It is understood that Rangers would look to double their investment if they were to sell this summer, but could struggle to do so because of the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.
In other Rangers news, Stuart McCall claims free transfers could hold key to Gers title success next term.
