Sven-Goran Eriksson backs Steven Gerrard to bring success to Rangers

Former England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson has backed Steven Gerard to bring success to Rangers.

The ex-Liverpool man, who played under the Swede during his time with the Three Lions, has failed to bring any silverware to Ibrox in his first two seasons with the Gers, and finished this campaign 13 points adrift of bitter rivals Celtic.

But Eriksson has backed him to turn things around, and has admitted that he has kept a lookout for the Gers’ results ever since his former player took over in the dugout.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “I have been following the results of Rangers, of course I have.

“I had Steven as a player and I have so much respect for him as a man. I want him to do well and I believe that he will be a successful manager for Rangers.

“I know he will be under pressure next season, but that won’t worry him. Steven will handle all the pressure that comes his way. Mentally, he is strong. He has a very good character and he is an extremely hard-working man.

“I am sure whatever challenge comes his way next season in Scotland, he will deal with it. He will be successful as a manager, I have no doubt about that.”

Can Gerrard bring success to Ibrox?

We certainly think so, yes.

Admittedly, he probably would have wanted to have wrapped up his first piece of silverware by now, but even without a prize to put in the trophy cabinet, there have still been promising signs.

This season he has seen his points per game jump from 2.00 to 2.31, and has amassed 67 points in four games fewer than it took him to reach 66 last term.

There is still work to be done, of course, but the fact that we’re moving in the right direction has to be cause for optimism.
