Report – SPFL consider postponing all Rangers v Celtic clashes until 2021 next season

All four Old Firm matches between Rangers and Celtic could be played in 2021 next season, according to the Scottish Sun

The proposal is understood to be one of a number of measures being cooked up by the SPFL as they look establish what the Scottish game will be like after the Coronavirus lockdown is lifted.

One of the ideas being considered is for the fixture schedule to be rejigged to ensure that there are no Glasgow derbies this year.

That would hopefully prevent the Old Firm from having to be played behind closed doors, in line with current guidelines that are being implemented across the professional game.

It is understood that both Rangers and Celtic are in favour of the move, and could see it approved by Sky Sports too.

The broadcaster sees its new £125 million deal with the Scottish Premiership kick in next term, and would presumably prefer to show such a lucrative clash in front of a capacity crowd, rather than an empty stadium.

What do we make of this move?

Honestly, we’re all for it.

Having a full calendar year without an Old Firm would be both bizarre and hugely disappointing, but if there is a way of ensuring that we can play the derby in front of a proper crowd, we would support it.

Few matches in the world can measure up to the atmosphere of Rangers v Celtic, and it would be crying shame if the game was deprived of that spectacle.

Of course, at this stage the SPFL are working on the assumption that we will be able to hold mass gatherings by 2021, and the nature of the virus could mean that their hopes are dashed between now and then.

But assuming all goes to plan, this seems like a sensible thing to do.
