Ibrox View: Ferguson text reveal surely shows Halliday attitude will be missed by Rangers
RANGERS OPINION
It’s surely the dream of every Rangers fan in the world to one day pull on that famous blue jersey and walk out onto the pitch at Ibrox.
For the overwhelming majority of us, that dream will sadly never become a reality.
But for Andy Halliday, he hasn’t just played for the Gers, he’s done himself incredibly proud in the process.
Which is why it was quite sad to see the 28-year-old included on a list of players who will not be renewing their contracts with the Gers for the 2020/21 campaign earlier this week.
For a player who grew up in Glasgow supporting the club, and who started his youth career with the Bears, you can only imagine how disappointing his looming exit must be on a personal level.
But judging by Barry Ferguson’s input on the matter, it would appear that Halliday is handling the news like the model professional we all know he is.
Writing in a column for the Daily Record, the Ibrox midfielder disclosed a text from Halliday in which he said: “I did what I always wanted to do – played with the club I supported and lived the dream”.
Full credit to the utility man for taking such an admirable stance here.
Halliday’s devotion to the cause in Glasgow has never been in doubt.
His willingness to fill in to any position that he has been to play has made him an important asset to Steven Gerrard during his time at the club, and he has stated previously that he was happy to take on a bit-part role if that is what the manager needed from him.
Not every player would have been so understanding when faced with long spells on the bench, and it’s a real measure of Halliday’s selflessness that he was always willing to put the team before his own personal play-time.
And if this latest update from Ferguson proves anything, it’s that Halliday’s attitude, presence, and dedication will be missed at Ibrox, even if he has been deemed surplus to requirements on the pitch.
