‘Talked a good game’ – Chris Sutton issues Twitter verdict on Sheyi Ojo Rangers exit
Chris Sutton has claimed that Rangers loanee Sheyi Ojo “talked a good game before he kicked a ball” at Ibrox this season.
The Liverpool winger struggled to make a positive impact in Glasgow this term, and has started just one Scottish Premiership match since the end of October.
The 22-year-old will leave the Gers and return to his parent club now that the Scottish season has been brought to an end, and took to social media on Thursday to praise the Ibrox faithful as the “best fans in the world”.
But Sutton seemingly fired a cheeky dig at the wide man online.
Writing from his personal Twitter account, referencing Ojo’s comments, he said: “Talked a good game before he kicked a ball”.
The wide man made headlines in July of last year when he professed his love for the Gers, claiming that the club felt like a “proper family”.
And it seems harsh for Sutton to take a pop at him like this.
We all know that Ojo hasn’t lived up to the expectations that preceded his arrival in Glasgow, but that shouldn’t preclude him from speaking highly of the club, or from praising the Gers’ fanbase.
The truth is that it is perfectly possible for Ojo to be underwhelming on the pitch, but still fully invested in Steven Gerrard’s project on the training ground.
In fact, Ibrox News have looked in detail at how the loanee has disappointed in certain performances this season, and it’s little wonder that a player who has been used so sparingly in 2020 is on his way out of the club with such little fanfare.
Compare his exit to Ryan Kent’s in 2018/19 – and the speculation that surrounded a potential permanent move last summer – and the difference is massive.
But none of that gives Sutton the right to take cheap shots at a young player who was clearly excited about joining such a huge club, and who will be just as disappointed as anybody that things haven’t gone as well as initially hoped.
