Romanian journo: Rangers in ‘final stages’ of agreeing permanent Hagi deal

Rangers are in the “final stages” of completing a permanent deal for loanee Ianis Hagi, according to Romanian journalist Emanuel Rosu.

The 21-year-old arrived in Glasgow on loan from Genk in January, and is understood to have an option-to-buy clause written into his deal at Ibrox.

The Gers are still yet to provide any concrete indication on whether or not they intend to make Hagi’s transfer from the Belgian side permanent, with sporting director Ross Wilson previously stating that the financial impact of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic could have a negative effect on the chances of a deal being struck.

But Rosu suggests that Hagi is keen for an agreement to be reached, and that a transfer is on the brink of completion.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, the reporter said: “Ianis Hagi’s move to Rangers on a permanent deal is in the final stages of settlement.

“Like I told you two weeks ago, the player’s wish was to play for Rangers no matter what offer comes his way.

“He made it clear to his representatives and to both Rangers and Genk.”

What does this mean for Rangers?

If it’s true, then it’s a brilliant update for the Gers.

Hagi has impressed since arriving in January, and if the option of signing him on a permanent deal is on the table, it feels like a no-brainer.

During his time at Ibrox he has averaged a 58.1% dribble completion rate – 4% higher than Ryan Kent’s this term – as well as 3.32 accurate crosses per game, as per Wyscout.

That latter figure is also 0.69 higher than Kent’s this season.

Factor in three goals and two assists in 10 outings, and it’s clear that Hagi has some serious potential.

With Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City both said to be keeping tabs on the playmaker, the sky really is the limit for him, and signing him up wouldn’t only improve the team in the here and now, it could also lead to a major payday for the Gers further down the line.
