Rangers confirm exits of six players as 20/21 preparations begin
Rangers have wasted no time in getting on with preparations for the 20/21 campaign and announced that six players will be leaving the club at the end of the month.
There are no real surprises, with the first three players announced as Andy Halliday, Jon Flanagan and Wes Foderingham.
Rangers announced the news on Tuesday evening, just a day after the 19/20 premiership campaign was ended early and Celtic awarded the title.
Rangers followed up with news that loanees Jason Holt (St Johnstone), Jordan Rossiter (Fleetwood) and Jak Alnwick (Blackpool) would also be departing.
Holt’s season is over and it’s likely that Rossiter and Alnwick’s League One campaign will go the same way, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
And, if the EFL clubs do vote to play on with League One, that will throw up an interesting test of the player contract issue.
One thing is certain, all six players will be looking for new clubs from now.
There are two we’d like to single out for praise.
Wes Foderingham has been a very loyal servant for Rangers and put in some solid performances in big games.
The goalkeeper arrived five years ago, has made 143 appearances and is good enough to deserve to play every week.
He’s just been unlucky to find himself behind Allan McGregor in the form of his career.
He’s 29 and that means he’s got at least one more big contract in him and we wish him the best of luck.
Andy Halliday’s career has come full circle after starting out at Rangers as a youth player and eventually making his return in 2015.
He’s made 152 appearances in total and we think he should have been given more of a chance to prove himself.
The sad thing is that Halliday and Foderingham have to leave without getting a proper send-off from the club and the fans.
