Ibrox View: It’s easy to have smypathy for Hearts after premature end to Premiership

The SPFL might have escaped an independent probe into their handling of the 19/20 season but they’re not off the hook yet.

After Monday’s announcement that the Premiership was over, one half of Glasgow was celebrating as they were awarded the title, although there will always be an asterisk over this one.

However, Hearts were relegated despite being just four points adrift with eight games left and owner Ann Budge has now threatened legal action unless she gets support for a temporary reconstruction of the Premiership.

That’s a proposal that didn’t get enough support last time round and it’s unlikely that clubs will change their minds just because Budge is going to take on the SPFL in the courts.

Why would they? Better for them to let this play out if the alternative is to take what they don’t want in the first place.

But this just proves what a mess the SPFL have made.

As Steven Gerrard said, why rush into a decision like this?

if the second-tier in England can arrange a plan to get matches going again – and they’re going back into training next week – why can’t the top-flight in Scotland?

Rangers wanted the chance to lose the title on the pitch. Hearts had a very realistic chance of survival.

They’ve come out of this the worst and it’s easy to have sympathy for them. It’s a decision that has huge implications for the club, although their form this season has been terrible.

Now, the game in Scotland is set to be dragged through the courts, which is another blot in the copybook of the SPFL.
