Ibrox View: Rangers must fend off Brentford to land Lewis Ferguson this summer
RANGERS OPINION
With Celtic likely to be crowned Scottish Premiership champions in a matter of hours, it’s time for Rangers to start looking ahead to next season and how they can prevent their bitter rivals from winning a dreaded 10-in-a-row.
The most obvious way of doing that is for Steven Gerrard to revamp his squad over the coming months in preparation for a fresh tilt on the title when we eventually get round to kicking things off again next term.
And it sounds as if the Gers have already set those wheels in motion.
According to a report from the Scottish Sun, the Ibrox giants are planning a double swoop for Livingston’s Lyndon Dykes and Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson this summer.
But if they are to land the latter, they may have a battle on their hands first.
According to the Daily Record, English Championship side Brentford are keen on the 20-year-old Scot, and have been scouting him since last summer.
It is understood that they have stepped up their interest in recent weeks too, and could finally pull the trigger on a swoop as they look to step up their plans for promotion to the Premier League.
The Gers’ prospects are dampened further by suggestions that Aberdeen are unwilling to sell their asset to a top Premiership rival.
But Rangers must still try to land the midfielder.
Despite the fact that he is still only 20, the youngster has been described as a “real leader” on the field, with a “big future” ahead of him by pundit Mark Wilson.
Similarly, former Ibrox hero Alex Rae has argued that the Gers should make a move for the player, and has pointed out that he has shedloads of potential left in him.
If Gerrard is serious about beating Celtic in the title race next season, and if he wants to bring in a big presences who can become key players for the Gers for years to come, he must be willing to go toe-to-toe with teams for his top targets.
In this case, that means fending off Brentford’s interest to make a top signing.
