Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce reacts to Wilson claim that pandemic could help Rangers to keep Morelos

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has claimed that Rangers would receive a real boost if they were able to keep hold of star man Alfredo Morelos as an indirect consequence of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that the Colombian needs to rediscover his goalscoring touch, but can still be a talismanic presence for the Gers.

The 23-year-old has scored just one goal since the winter break after hitting 28 in the first half of the campaign.

Despite his dip in form, however, Morelos is still understood to be a target for both St. Etienne and Atletico Madrid this summer.

But Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has suggested that the ongoing global health crisis and the impact it will have on clubs’ potential spending power in the upcoming transfer window has lessened the likelihood of the South American leaving.

And Bruce believes that can only be a good thing for the Gers.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “Morelos needs to get back to the form that he showed at the start of last season, and not towards the end.

“He needs to get himself back scoring goals, and when he does do that, if they can keep him and have their talisman back banging them in again, it will only stand them in good stead for when the season starts up.

“He’s a very good player with huge potential, he knows where the back of the net is, and he has got that really, really strong desire to win.”

Football Insider reported last month that the Gers’ hopes of securing their initial asking price of around £30 million for the striker have taken a substantial hit following his recent dip in form.

The outlet does suggest that the Ibrox giants are fully aware of the fact that a number of clubs are still tracking Morelos’ progress, however.
