Barry Ferguson claims he is ‘certain’ Steven Gerrard can win trophies with Rangers
Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has claimed that Steven Gerrard is the right man to bring silverware back to Ibrox.
The ex-Liverpool legend has yet to lift a trophy during his two seasons in Glasgow, with his side 13 points behind bitter rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership prior to the suspension of play because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
And while Ferguson acknowledges that success is a must next term, he has also argued that Gerrard is good enough to ensure the blue half of Glasgow have something to celebrate in the near future.
Writing in a column for the Daily Record, he said: “It would be madness to even consider changing manager at this stage – not that Rangers will be. I have argued with my mates in group chats over Gerrard’s position, a lot of people are questioning if he can take the club any further.
“But I am certain he has potential to be a winning Rangers manager.
“He knows the demands and expectations and that he absolutely has to bring home silverware next year – Liverpool legend or not that is the only thing he will be judged on in the eyes of the Rangers support.
“But he’s strong enough to handle that, he is passionate. He knows he needs to do better and most importantly he will have a pretty good idea of what he needs.”
Can Gerrard bring success to Ibrox?
His first two years may have been barren on the trophy front, but there are definite signs of improvement from the Gers under his management.
An impressive Europa League run has been cut short by the global health crisis, while on another day we could well have beaten Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final back in December.
The league has arguably been the arena in which the Gers have improved the most though.
This season we have seen Gerrard’s points per game average jump from 2.00 to 2.31.
Moreover, it has taken his side 29 matches to get 67 points on the board – it took them 33 matches to register 66 points last term.
Of course, there is still a considerable gap to close between us and Celtic, but things are definitely moving in the right direction.
