Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce claims potential move for Thomas Robert could be ‘very good’ for Rangers

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has claimed that Montpellier winger Thomas Robert could be a “very good acquisition” for Rangers this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that if the teenager was anywhere near as talented as his father – former Newcastle United wide man Laurent Robert – then the Gers could have a promising asset on their hands.

A recent report from Football Insider claims that the 19-year-old Frenchman has turned down a new deal with his current employers, and could be available on a free transfer this summer.

And with Rangers named as a potential destination for the starlet, Bruce – who is the son of current Newcastle boss Steven Bruce – is certain that Steven Gerrard will be taking an interest in his situation as it progresses.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “If he’s anywhere near as good as his dad then he would be a very good acquisition – but people said that about me and I was nowhere near as good as mine!

“Let’s hope he is though.

“Buying young and taking a chance on an exciting player with a good pedigree like he has, obviously is something that would be interesting to Steven Gerrard.

“If he is able to fulfil his potential and become anywhere near as decent as his old man, it could be a really good piece of business.”

Robert has yet to make his first team debut for Montpellier, but has been training with the first team setup all season.

Despite his lack of senior experience, the Ligue 1 side recently saw fit to offer the youngster a four-year contract, but he has rejected the deal and is said to be angling for a move to Britain this summer, having grown up in England during his father’s time in the north east.
