Stenhousemuir confirm intention to vote in favour of Rangers SPFL probe
Stenhousemuir have become the latest club to throw their support behind Rangers’ call for an independent probe into the SPFL.
The League Two outfit released a statement on Tuesday morning – hours before the historic EGM that will decide whether or not an inquiry will be launched – and confirmed that they will vote in favour of the Gers’ resolution.
While stopping short of taking a side in the debate, Stenny did claim that they feel an investigation is the best way to restore trust in the under-fire governing body.
Stenhousemuir’s statement follows similar public announcements from Aberdeen and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, both of who have pledged to support the motion.
An excerpt from the statement reads: “It is vitally important for the good of the game that we try to find solutions that can move matters forward, as opposed to what feels like being stuck in a constant battle of recriminations.
“Therefore, Stenhousemuir FC intends to support the Resolution put forward by a number of clubs at the SPFL EGM on the 12th May.
“We wish to make it absolutely clear that we are not picking sides in the debate that has raged over the past few weeks, but instead we believe that everyone involved in Scottish football needs to look in the mirror and ask themselves if they honestly believe that the culture and governance in our league setup is working as effectively as it should for the benefit of all its members?
“Our support for the Resolution is not about retribution and is not aimed at anyone individually or collectively. Instead we hope that it can lead to greater transparency and provide a foundation for ending the mistrust that has crept into our league organisation.”
What should we make of Stenny’s statement?
To be fair to the League Two outfit, they’ve taken a really reasonable stance here.
While they may have stopped short of accusing the SPFL of any voting illegality, they recognise that trust in the Scottish game is at an all time low, and that something must be done about it.
It’s an old adage, but if the governing body have nothing to hide then they’ve got nothing to worry about.
If an investigation is brought forth and finds no evidence of malpractice then so be it, at least then we move on from this whole sorry debacle and look to ways that the Scottish game can begin to mend itself.
If, however, there has been improper behaviour going on behind the scenes, people must be held to account for their actions.
The only way we will ever know for sure is to launch this inquiry.
Hopefully, more teams follow Stenny’s example and vote with logic, rather than self-interest.
